NETWORK WORLD FUSION FOCUS: JEFF CARUSO on HIGH SPEED LANS

Today's Focus: 10-Gig for the masses? Part 1
---------------------------------------------------------
By Jeff Caruso
Last week, I briefly mentioned that the IEEEs 10-Gig Ethernet task
force had some disagreement over the physical component of the standard
for multimode fiber. Naturally, theres more to the story.
Some members of the task force favor limiting the number of physical
medium dependent (PMD) interfaces to three, while other members want to
include five.
If there were only three interfaces, the low-cost 850-nanometer optics
would be left out, leaving only long-wavelength optics that are
generally considered more expensive.
In a nutshell, those who want to keep the number to three argue that
too many interfaces could be confusing and could slow adoption, while
others argue that there needs to be a low-cost alternative, also to
speed adoption.
Some say that all the interfaces should be approved, and the market can
sort them out; others say that it is the task forces duty to weed out
the weak options before standardizing.
