NETWORK WORLD FUSION FOCUS: JEFF CARUSO on HIGH SPEED LANS
Today's Focus: 10-Gig and single-mode fiber

By Jeff Caruso
I have probably already written too much lately about 10-Gigabit
Ethernet (one of my fellow editors says shes sick of the topic), but I
figured its my duty to pass along some news that happened at the most
recent meeting of the 10-Gig task force.
According to the 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance, the task force has
agreed on the core content of the standard for single-mode fiber.
That is, it has adopted the major logic elements, such as the media
access control layer, the physical coding sublayer, media independent
interfaces and a couple of physical medium dependent (PMD) interfaces.
The sticking point, I hear, was with the PMD interfaces for multimode
fiber. Multimode is usually a lower-cost alternative. There seems to be
disagreement over the best way to implement 10-Gigabit Ethernet over
multimode fiber. According to the alliance, the task force will turn to
these issues in its September meeting.
Meanwhile, task force editors will start writing the first draft of the
standard.
