Not that I've been overwhelmed with offers or anything...

I really had to solve this problem and so I've managed to sorT this
out for myself.  I even ended up upgrading to a more recent version of
mysql in the process.  Everything is working very well.

  (It would have helped considerably if at the minimum the methodology
  for enabling mysql support with a mod_php3-mysql package was put
  into the .spec file but then commented out.  Without mysql in the
  main distribution, I can see why it wasn't done in the first place
  as it needs to be linked against the mysqlclient library.  It also
  appears that the licencing for mysql has changed recently).
