source can be a bit problematic...

This is true, but if you use the rpms and need that the same applies. Either
way your on a one way trip to patch city. An efficient kernel contains the
bare minimum, with modules for other stuff, and the required security
patches. Bear that in mind, and you'll do a lot better.
