hi,
first of all I don't know the overall quality of 7.0 since I'm just come
back from my vacation, but I read many mails and news about in which
people are criticize red hat why they include gcc 2.96 in 7.0.
it seems to me in the last few years that there are just a few people
who are using c++ on linux, but this seems more obvious after these
responses. those who realy would like to use c++ first need a good c++
compiler. linux do not have any good (free) c++ compiler. egcs is not
one of them. it's very limited on the filed of template, exception,
namespace... those who realy argue have to look at more carefuly about
it. gcc-2.96 which is not realy exists are much better, those who realy
wanna use c++ with all of it feature would have be happy red hat finally
include it in their distribution. if I were rh I even include libstdc++-v3
which is another essential part of a good c++ developer enviroment.
now since v3 is the default stdc++ library in gcc I hope next rh distro
will include a 'complete' standard c++ developmnet enviroment.
ps. yes I know about the binary compatibility and the new ABI differencies,
but than we can say rh have to include libc-5 and not glibc or glibc2.0,
not glibc2.2 like now (glib2.1.9x is 2.2:-) and not the 2.4 kernel series...
sometime have to change to the newer and it's high time now. when rh
switch to glibc or elf from a.out than it was a good decision. sooner is
better.
