The current operation of uname is highly unhelpful. The purpose of uname is to indicate the type and version of the system being used on a computer. At the moment the Redhat 4.2 and 5.0 (for example) systems both give identical output despite the fact that binaries are not interchangeable between the two systems. Please can this be fixed. Is there a good reason not to have: -r "Print the operating system release" give RH5.0 -s "Print the operating system name." give Linux and -v "Print the operating system version." give 2.0.30 This would be consistent with other Unixes. The date and time at which the kernel was compiled (current output of uname -v) is not generally useful. Richard. -- ----------------------------------------------+------------------------ Dr. R.J.
