The situation as it stands:

1. I have a genuine Creative Labs Soundblaster 16. It's not PnP, I had to set
everything up with jumpers. It has a proprietary CD-ROM controller on it which
is not being used.

2. I have the card set to use the "standard" set of resources:

        IRQ:5
        Audio I/O:220
        Low DMA:1
        High DMA:5
        MIDI I/O:330

3. When I originally installed Linux, I installed the Multimedia Machine
components. So far I haven't heard a peep out of the machine and haven't been
able to use any audio apps. (x11amp gives me a few errors.)

4. When I ran sndconfig. It said; 'error writing to /dev/audio' when it was
supposed to play a test sound.

Is this a permissions problem? I am logged in as root. I looked at the "file"
audio in /dev and noticed that it has a size of 4. There is also a permission
that I am not familiar with, but the other drivers seemed to be set the same
way. 'c' where I am used to seeing a 'd' 'l' or '-'. What does that signify?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has suggestions. :)
