Yes and 3.1 doesn't like them either.
cd to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts and then in every
sub-directory where you have *.gz fonts issue the following as root:
rm -rf fonts.dir
gzip -d *.gz
compress *.pcf
mkfontdir .
This will correct the problem.
