NIS problem: ypserv crashing...

Platform Redhat 5.1/Intel. ypserv crashes on the yp server when users try to
login to a client machine. It seems to be crashing in looking up the
passwd.byuid map, but lookups on that work when caused by just using id.

Anyone got any ideas?
