Hi Ron,

I tried temporarily restoring the original /bin/login (using the one in the
"live" directory on the CDROM) and with that version, I get the same
behavior that you do.  I hadn't seen this before, since I installed all the
fixes from the RedHat "errata" that were available at the time I installed
5.0 and have kept up with them since that time, checking for new ones from
time to time.  If you do all the updates, or at least apply the
util-linux-2.7-15.rpm one, you shouldn't get the "." in the PATH any more.

You'll find the RPM in /pub/redhat/redhat-5.0/updates/i386 at
ftp.redhat.com.

You really should install *ALL* the updates if your machine is exposed on
the Internet.  There are a number of security-related patches.  You can
read all the gory details on RedHat's web page in the "errata" section.
