Thanks (at last) to Kees-Jan Dijkzeul <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
for the tip to look at /etc/syslog.conf.  For some reason, the line
sending kernel messages to the console was commented out (not
something I did--is it that way in the sysklogd-1.3-15 RPM for some
reason?).  Uncommenting the line

        kern.*    /dev/console

causes more sensible behavior.  I don't know for sure what was
appearing on VC7, but I'll bet it was messages from the X server or
XDM.
