problem solved - a weird recursive entry in my news spool:
/var/spool/news/[some-more-stuff]/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/1......etc
strangely enough it had never been picked up by fsck!!
curious ... but fixed at last!! :)
