Make sure you're root (no offense -- I mention this because this is still on 
my Top 10 Dumb Error List), and try:

make menuconfig (in a terminal)
make xconfig (only in Xwindows)

You will need the developer tools, but RH will add those if you install the 
Kernel Hacking option in setup.
