Oops. My bad. apt did install--it's synaptic that has a problem:

And for the record, I *despise* Windoze. Linux problems (such as rpm hell) 
are minor compared to the insanity of Windoze. Ever had to fix problems with 
their idiotic "registry"? I have. Root canals are more fun.
