Nevermind, Trial and error, erasing the disk although it appeared to be empty (my guess is a failed write attempt left some gargabe on it that made it appear full) and mounting and unmounting the drive after writing (because without it all my files looked like unicode garbage), and changing permission to allow me to see the folder ended up working fine.
It's nice to be backup up because you can put me in the sometimes ignorant/reckless sometimes cautiously experimental but mostly can't tell the difference category.
