The box will perform better if it can cache all the ram in l2 cache,
otherwise it has to go to system memory which is slower.  The tx chipset
(which the abit tx5 has) can only cache 64mb.

A good non-PII chipset is the via vp2 (also known as the amd640).  It's
a socket7 board that can cache up to 512meg of ram, and can run split
voltage cpu's such as those by amd and cyrix.  Boards that use it
include the FIC PA2007 (which I just bought) and the Shuttle HOT-603
