Are these files being generated on three different machines?  And _none_
of them can make zips the right way?  And decompression (on all three
machines) is also problematic?

They're not being compressed across a network, are they? (trying to
eliminate the possibility of a bad disk somewhere.)

That's really strange.  None of my Linux boxes have ever botched a zip. 
Can you reliably decompress archives that you've downloaded from
someplace else?
