I've never actually created a zip, binhex, or gz file as a test.
However, most (but not all) of the time compressed downloads that have
at some point been saved on my RH server refuse to decompress,
regardless of box or origin (linux, mac, or win95).
On a side note, rpms work fine, and I've not had other problems that
could be related to disk error. This is why I'm asking the list, since
I'm leaning heavily away from disk error, unless there's a weird disk
format error WRT to compressed files.
BTW, I have two HDs, a Quantum FWSCSI2 2.1 gig, and a seagate 4.3 gig
UWSCSI w/ 80pin SCA connector, all on an adaptec 2940 FWSCSI2 card. (i'm
not sure of models and firmware revs off the top of my head)
The problem occurs on both drives, all partitions.

all of my compressed files are downloads off the net. The sole exception
is the tarball of php3, which I retrieved from home, and which worked
there. It's failure led me to connect the dots WRT all of the bad win
zips and bad binhexs.
... and yes it is VERY weird.
