You don't say whether you're doing this by telnet or ssh. If ssh, enable X11 Forwarding, but don't manually export the display; leave that to ssh. Also, check your firewall settings on both ends (unless you're using ssh with X11 forwaring), and that you have a local X server running. -- "Of course I'm in shape!
