Thanx for the input.
Downloaded the package again and renamed it to kernel-2.4.18-24.8.0.i686.rpm
(removing the [1] that was in the name.

if I executed rpm -ivvvh kernel-2[1].4.18-24.8.0.i686.rpm I get:

[root@EATracking rherm]# rpm -ivvvh kernel-2[1].4.18-24.8.0.i686.rpm
D: found 0 source and 0 binary packages
[root@EATracking rherm]#

executing rpm -ivvvh kernel-2.4.18-24.8.0.i686.rpm
installed the package.

etc/grup.conf file looks now like this:

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.

#          kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda6
#          initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=1
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

        initrd /initrd-2.4.18-24.8.0.img
