I have no experience with Soft-raid 1, but I've been using LVM in HP-UX and now Linux for years. Very happy with it. Using with ext3 in RH8 and RH7.3 no problems to report, except in 7.3 I had to issue: vgchange -a y <volume-group-name> in /etc/rc.d/rc.local to keep mount -a from barking during boot.
