Verify that the old kernel boots, before doing anything more. If it boots ok, then you can cleanup while running the old kernel. Verify that you are running the old kernel with 'uname -r' and be sure it says 2.4.18-14. I'd suggest removing all kernel packages except the one that you want to boot. (rpm -e kernel-bigmem kernel-smp kernel-debug kernel-uml) Personally, I'd also remove kernel-2.4.18-24.8.0, and try again, only installing the i686 package. If that causes an error or warning, we can go from there. Having all those packages installed isn't going to help track anything down.
