I've installed it about 4 times on RH7 and 7.2. Unfortunately I don't have any magic bullets for you though. I know you have to untar the source in /usr/src and then add a symbolic link to the kernel source naming it linux, but I seem to remember that the steps for compiling on the web documentation at freeswan.org worked well.
