Thanks a lot to everybody for all the ideas/clarifications. Im not keen on using any 
particular X application 
in order to do some basic stuff I could do with text-based applications. In that sense 
I appreciate
the suggestions of Emmanuel for text-based web browser, mail readers, and so on. With 
your 
help I know now where to focus my  searches.
