It's no worse than saying "miles ahead of" but that is badjunk use too.

Actually, I think I'll just consider you mistaken. Saying "miles ahead" is a perfectly valid way to describe the difference between two software packages.
When I asked how far someplace is, I often ask "miles or minutes". It is clear that there are at least two ways to measure such things.
