I'm using a USB Logitech wheel mouse and it works fine.
My /etc/X11/XF86Config file contains the following.
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "/dev/mouse"
ZAxisMapping 4 5
In mouseconfig, I chose Logitech MouseMan Wheel (USB).
