ok, i turned it on and off again, still nothing!

how do i 'recompile the kernel with "Local APIC support" turned OFF'?

i found this on a site: (so its not a modem, but it might work the same way)

"Plug And Play (PnP) Modems
Most modems today are PnP and most will (with some effort) work with Linux. It's best to get one that has jumpers (shunts) to disable PnP. In many cases, if you simply set the jumpers for a certain COM number and IRQ number, this will disable PnP. You may also want (need ??) to disable PnP in your computer's BIOS. If you can't disable PnP then you may try:

Boot Win95/98, configure the modem, and see if the settings are preserved when you boot Linux. If not, then:

Boot Win95/98, configure the modem, and then warm boot Linux so that the settings are preserved. You can do this with the loadlin boot loader
"

can i have a little more detail on how to 'warm boot' linux?

and then i found something about forced hardware, where i force it to update the ESCD with windows, but the 'Use automatic settings' for it couldnt be enabled or disabled. i was thinking along the lines of, if i can go into linux, and fill in a bunch of information about it that i got from windows, it might 'force update' it.

i also noticed, that when it does the PnP part of the boot, it doesnt mention anything about the NIC, just my crappy sound card, so it may not be the PnP! *is getting close to frusterated*
