If I were you I would custom compile a kernel. I don't recall which
features are built into the stock compilation but I don't think they
include Advanced Power Management which is supported. There are some
Dell-laptop-specific compilation options as well. It's worth the hour
that it will take. I have a dual-boot Dell laptop that is getting what
seems to be the same battery life in Linux and Windows but I haven't
really tested.
