My old Sony notebook has an external monitor output connector, and it
works fine under Red Hat Linux with no configuration required--except
for a reboot to notice there is a monitor plugged in. (If there were
BIOS support I think this would not be necessary, but Sony doesn't
give out those technical details.)

As for second monitors, there is something in XFree86 called
"Xinerama" (I think is the spelling) that lets one build a big desktop
out of two (or more monitors). I haven't played with it, but it looks
like a farily simple config file edit is all it takes to light up a
dual-monitor card. (No, not as easy as the Mac to configure.) I
think I have read that getting differing video cards to work is not so
easy.

-kb, the Kent who would have to do some searching to find out how to
configure Xinerama.
