Yes, but I just want to use the feature that I can specify different umasks for
different directories.
And I want to prevent users from uploading files with specific names (e.g.
starting with a dot ".")

vsftpd is much more secure, you can set user home folders
you can even hide the actual paths so that users
doesnt know where there folder is actually located.
also check man vsftpd and man vsftpd.conf
