I'm not sure as to if this can be set as default or not, but even in
Windows it only shows if you open Explorer.exe (as opposed to normally
browsing through other methods), or by enabling the folders sidebar in the
window.  In Nautilas there is some CPU and memory overhead when using this
feature, and probably shouldn't be enabled by default anyways.

This can be set as default.  I don't have a Linux box to tell you
specifically where to go, but it is in the Nautilus preferences.
