Ok, as a work around, I had to add LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 to the
beginning of the line like this:

LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 rpm -qa |grep kernel

and it worked... 

Sheeesh.. Its getting more and more cryptic to use these servers anymore
