I have such experience after search for info (I try to find again but
forgot sorry) with some words in kernels source, there are some hack
and when compiled with gcc-2.8.x cause XFree(in my case and isapnp
pnpdump not work Segmentation fault)Segmentation Fault
so simply downgrade to gcc-2.7.2.3 if you want to compile kernel
 I read that workaround have in recent kernels i.e. 2.1.x (current
2.1.98)
