I am using both. I use ssh for terminal apps and VNC for GUI programs. SSH is not quick enough for X-apps even though I have cable connection. For example, when I draw a picture on screen with gimp or lyx, the whole picture has to be transfered to X while VNC needs only what will be on screen.
