Avoid tarballs whenever possible, and use RPM if you want to just use
software without having to wade through the source code. Read the section
on RPM in your Red Hat User's Guide, which an online version is available
at

http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/RHL-5.0-Installation-Guide-HTML/manual/

I say toss that netscape tarball and get one of the following netscape RPMs:

ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/updates/5.0/i386/netscape-communicator-4.04-3.i386.rpm
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/updates/5.0/i386/netscape-navigator-4.04-3.i386.rpm

(communicator includes netscape mail, netscape news, and an HTML editor in
addition to the regular navigator, but is also bigger and I think eats
more memory when running)

After you get e.g. the navigator you install it by being root, going to
the directory in which you're storing the package, and typing

% rpm -ivh netscape-navigator-4.04-3.i386.rpm

Once it's installed, you don't need the .i386.rpm file anymore, but if you
have the room you may want to hang on to it, just in case you need it
again someday for some reason I can't imagine.

For other packages, see the following locations (may take a few tries to
get in 'cause of high traffic):

    ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/powertools-5.0/i386/

contains RPM packages that didn't quite make the cut to be included in
RHL, but have been deemed useful enough by Red Hat that they are
    offered as a separate collection.

ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/contrib/hurricane/i386/ - assorted RPM packages not

contains assorted RPM packages not included with RHL that people have
built and have been nice enough to send off to Red Hat for
distribution so everybody can use them.

    ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/redhat-5.0/updates/i386/

contains updates for packages that were included with RHL 5.0 but were
later found to contain bugs or security snafus or whatever. I
recommend that you check the support->errata section at Red Hat's
website regularly and read over the documentation there for the
various items before updating the packages, since there are
occasionally extra steps you need to take before doing "rpm -Uvh
    package.i386.rpm" with these packages.

Have at it.
