This has happened to me. What I did was boot off the emergency repair
floppy, mount root, and eliminate the password from /etc/passwd. This
is a little tricky to describe because you have to know lots of gory
details about mknod/mount/sed/etc ...

Otherwise, I'd try to reinstall and not give root *any* password, if the
install permits this.

There may be other ways ... Good luck on 24 hrs!
