We are considering some Compaq Prolinea 850R servers to run Redhat 5.0 for
web/mail/news servers. Has anyone had any experience with these servers
under Linux, good or bad? My main concerns are compatibility with the
ethernet and SCSI controllers in the Compaq server. Compaq does a good job
of disguising normal brand-name chipsets with their own names, none of
which are listed on the hardware compatibility listing. Some of the
machines will probably have 2 Pentium Pro CPU's in them, so SMP
compatibility/performance is a factor as well. I would appreciate any
feedback anyone may have on these machines. They appear to be quite
resonably priced at the moment, and they only take 3 rack spaces which is a
nice feature as well. Thanks.
