When your lilo prompt is displayed, type: linux single .
It will get you into single user mode.  Then you can run
Setup, choose System services and disable sendmail.  This
will switch off automatic sendmail loading on start-up.
If you still need it, then you can check out the logs
or something and correct the problem of your sendmail.

I think there is also another solution, although I have not
tried it yet.  While booting, you see the message that says
something like "Press 'I' to enter Redhat interactive startup".
My guess is that it will ask you for each application to start.
(The analogy of Step-by-step confirmation in M$ boot).

By the way, anyone have ever used this interactive startup?
What is that?
