When in X, that's Ctrl-Alt-F1, otherwise it won't work. Actually, I'd
recommend Ctrl-Alt-F2, as the first virtual terminal is most likely
blocked by the X session. The second one should be free.
Another possible option is Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the X server.
Of course, both combinations will only work if the keyboard is still
responsive.
