Perhaps I didn't explain it very well.  I know what -qa does.

My point is, the files that are shown by -qa are NOT the versions in the
directory that I did the 'rpm -Uvh *.rpm' in.

rpm -q = Query
rpm -qa = querie the installed rpms
rpm -qa | grep gnome-core   = query local installed db and only show
gnome-core

-qa does not query the rpm files in the local dir.
