dumpe2fs -h /dev/hdb1 |grep count

Just a killed partition table, and the information that there used to be
two primary partitions of approximately equal size. Since one partition
had to be at the beginning, it was easy to get that back to working (and
later determine its correct size with dumpe2fs).
