Configuring E16 for gnome is not very hard. It took me a whole hour
to "fix it". A few complaints from irate gnome users about the E pager,
and the use of multiple desktops required a little fine tunning of
things. Fairly simple really. I'm not even a E developer.

I suspect that RH will be using a new WM with their next release.
Which kinda makes sense as there is a fair amount of overlap between E
and gnome. It's damn annoying to try to explain to a new user why there
are 2 config tools with simliar configuration options. Or why when they
set their background via E it gets changed at startup. This still
doesn't explain why they didn't go to E16, as the issues exist in both
15, and 16.

Here's all that needs to be done in /usr/share/enlightenment/config:

cp keybindings.gmc.cfg keybindings.cfg

change all instances of
__ACTION __A_GOTO_DESK
to
__ACTION __A_AREA_LINEAR_SET
in keybindings.cfg

edit control.cfg
remove the iconbox:
  __ICONBOX __BGN
    __NAME DEFAULT
    __ORIENTATION __HORIZONTAL
    __TRANSPARENCY __OFF
    __SHOW_NAMES __ON
    __ICON_SIZE 48
    __ICON_MODE 2
    __SCROLLBAR_SIDE __BAR_BOTTOM
    __SCROLLBAR_ARROWS __BOTH
    __AUTOMATIC_RESIZE __OFF
    __SHOW_ICON_BASE __OFF
    __SCROLLBAR_AUTOHIDE __OFF
  __END

shutoff the E pager
35c35
< __SHOW_PAGERS __ON
---
> __SHOW_PAGERS __OFF

change number of Desktops to 1
 __NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS 1

change Desktop area to 2 2
__DESKTOP_AREA_SIZE 2 2

I've yet to find anything within reason that can't be fixed by editing
files in /usr/share/enlightenment/config. This is a matter of adding a
single patch to the
E16 rpm to create a gnome friendly default.
