Friends,
I need help.

I'm in a catch-22.  Currently, I have recently installed Red Hat 6.1, but am using command line mode only, and without printer support.  I can't seem to configure my printer without X, and I can't configure my X during the install from the CD-rom because it doesn't have the latest drivers required for my video card.

I tried to configure "X" first.  My video card is a "SR9 Savage 4" from Number Nine Visual Technologies.  According to their web-site,  www.nine.com  , I need the special "SVGA" server updated in the 3.3.6 level of Xfree86.  I have determined that I have only the 3.3.5-3 level, and that I am using glibc 2.1, a piece of information that is critical for downloading the correct version, apparently.  I download a dozen or so *.tgz files, from the glibc 2.1-based directory, and was able to run the preinst.sh, extract each file, and postinst.sh, but it doesn't seem to help.  The Red Hat guides suggest running Xconfigurator, but this goes through panel after panel, at the end telling me, "Something is not working, try again."

I then tried to configure my printer.  I add the "alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc" line to my /etc/printcap as suggested in the FAQ on Red Hat's website.  The "/etc/printcap" file has very stern warning not to edit it directly, but to run Red Hat's "printtool" program.  I try to run printtool from the command line since I don't have "X" running, and it chokes with:

Couldn't load bindings.tcl
Start from control-panel or set environment variable
CONTROL_PANEL_LIB_DIR to the control-panel library dir.
(normally this is /usr/lib/rhs/control-panel)

Of course, I find control-panel, but it doesn't run without "X" either.

So, I have three questions:

(a) Is there any way to configure my printer without having "X" running, using command line commands and the "vi" editor.
(b) Is there any way I can get "X" windows running in a very basic VGA mode, so I can run all of these fancy "configurators" Red Hat provides that are unavailable from the command line?
(c) Is there an "rpm" method of installing Xfree86 version 3.3.6?  The mirror site for Xfree86.org did not have any "*.rpm" files.

Thanks!
