Ok, in short: All you need is another machine which is set up to either
export the CD-ROM drive as an NFS share or to make it available via FTP.
Given that, on your 486 the installer will give you the option to choose
either NFS or FTP install. After that, it'll ask you for all necessary
details about your NIC and your network, i.e. it's part of the installer.

"The Official Red Hat Linux Reference Guide", Part II, Chapter 10:
"Installing over a Network".
