I haven't used partition magic since pre 4.0 ( was it 3.2? ).  That
version would corrupt its own files during specific operations.  This was
a documented bug.  It didn't matter a whole lot, since everything else
seemed to work right.

parted is GNU Free software.  You can find it at
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/
It supports ext2, FAT16 and FAT32 partitions.
