Yea, well, you see I failed to notice you are trying to log in as root.. By
default root cannot telnet or ftp into a linux box..  I never use root for
that purpose so I never looked into changing that default.  I'm sure it can
be set with linuxconf somehow..  Sorry about the misunderstanding
