I did the lot, make clean, dep, modules, module-install

what i'm wondering about is when i'm in the menu I might have missed
selecting one of the module or will
selecting a module that's not default cause this problem ?

If this is a different kernel from the previous running kernel you'll
definately have to do 'make modules' and 'make modules_install'. See the
kernel HOWTO for details (available in /usr/doc/HOWTO) or via a link at
any of the standard linux portals.
