I can't answer your question directly, but I use the LRP (Linux Router
Project) and it will support at least 2.5-3Mbits on an ISA 10Mb card
running on a 486/50 with 16+M of ram. I haven't seen any tests on boxes
as large as what you've described, but based on what I've see, and assuming
you're only doing routing, I'd guess something like a Pentium 200 with 64M
and PCI nics, would be more than sufficient. You might search the LRP
sites for more precise info. I believe there has been some discussion of
routing multiple (3 or more?) full 100Mb full duplex LAN segments with no
problems on much less hardware. Also, if/when you do this, be sure to
rebuild you're kernel for routing (optimized for routing etc). Makes
a big difference.
