Hey folks --
First, if there's a better forum for this question, please point
me in the proper direction. I don't want to waste anyone's time.
I'm taking yet another stab at getting off of Windows. This is, I
guess, about my third run at Linux. I get closer every time.. heh.
Anyway, over time I've built up my relationship with the IT dept
at work to where they've given me the OK to put Linux on my laptop.
I hedged my bets and split my drive so I can duel boot.
So far so good, but I have two big hangups. First, we use Lotus Notes
(blech) at the office. Second, I'm a Vignette StoryServer developer,
and their clients are java-based. I use both of these tools pretty
often, so the way things are now I'm constantly booting back and
forth.
Problem 1: Has anyone had any luck running the Notes client under
WINE or some other kind of emulation system? (Lotus makes a Linux
server, but not a client, insofar as I can figure.) I'm not too freaked
about performance as I only use Notes for email.
Problem 2: Of course, java is cross-OS, but the client starts up
off an .exe file. A kindly inside source at Vignette gave me some
clues on how to get the stuff running under other OS's (unsupported
of course), and I hope to eventually figure out how to use that info
(lots of Mac guys in our group and I hate to see them being forced
to do Windows), but in the meantime would it be totally nuts to run
a Windows java session under an emulator?
I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks!
PS: I've installed RH 7, and lurking on this list I'm seeing that
a lot of people aren't thinking warm thoughts about this version.
So far things seem to be running OK. Should I be worried?
