What interface are you trying to use?  Traceroute doesn't do a real good
job of detecting the correct interface when you have more then one.  You
may have to use the -i option, especialy if you are tracing a connection
to the Internet over a PPP connnection.  I always had to use
"traceroute -i ppp0 <host>" when I was using a PPP connection.
